Thermostat Connection

There are two ways of connecting a thermostat to the electrical supply:  either directly to the mains or by means of a plug socket.  When a thermostat is connected directly to the supply a 2 pole isolator must be fitted which allows both current carrying conductors (live and neutral) to be isolated from the mains supply.  In case of a plug connection, this is not necessary as pulling out the plug will isolate the floor heating from the mains supply.

In a direct supply, the heaters may have a dedicated supply or may use the supply of a plug circuit.  If a fixed appliance shares the supply with a plug circuit, this is called mixed loading.

Coldbuster®
heaters must be earthed and connected to the supply through an Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB).
Earth Leakage Breaker
ELCB
The Earth Leakage Breaker can be found in the electrical Distribution Board (DB).  The ELCB has a push button for testing its operation.  If this unit does not trip when the test button is pressed, it is faulty and must be replaced.

Its operation is very important for your safety and that of other members of your household!

Step 1. Ensure the supply you want to use with your heating system is connected through an ELCB. This can be tested in various ways, but the easiest is by pressing the test button on the ELCB. The unit must trip and there should be no power going to the thermostat.

Step 2. Check that the circuit is able to handle the additional load current of your floor heating system. The current required may be calculated by dividing the capacity of the heater by the supply voltage. e.g. A heating element of 1000 Watt draws a current of 1000/230 = 4.2 Amps.  Circuit breakers supplying power to plug sockets are normally rated at 20 Amp overload.

Bathrooms / Showers: Ensure the thermostat and it's connections are at least 600 mm (0.6 m) away from the bathtub or shower-pan (measured in horizontal direction) and take special care that bathroom floor heaters are properly earthed and connected through the ELCB!!

klimastat KlimaStat™ only: Pull the control knob forward to expose the little screw underneath.  Loosen the screw and remove the cover.  Mount the KlimaStat™ as well as the channel to the wall (see photograph).

Connect the KlimaStat™ wires as follows:

  • Mains live supply (often red) - brown on loose cable.
  • Orange cable(s) from heater(s)
  • N. Neutral from supply (black ) - blue on loose cable.
  • N. Black cable(s) from heater.
  • E. All green-yellow cables must be joined together with a separate connector and connected to the Earth from the supply

The KlimaStat™ itself does not have an earth connection as it requires no earthing. If necessary, cut the cover to allow the cables to pass through to the plastic channel, replace the cover and tighten the screw. Push the knob control back onto the shaft (you will have to turn it, so the key fits and the knob is flush with the housing).

In case of a different model thermostat, follow the instructions which came with the unit.
